New Poetry Chapbook: Sketches: An Ekphrasic Journey
(from Sketches: An Ekphrasic Journey) A Note From The Author When my sister suddenly died in late May of 2004, I was the one who cleaned out her apartment and decided what to keep, throw away, or donate. Her drawings were one of the main items I kept. I tucked them away in my closet for two years and then in my basement when I married and moved. Three years after my move and five years after my sister’s death; I pulled out her portfolio stuffed with sketchbooks and old poste

Creating Ekphrasic and Erasure Poetry
As a poet, it is only natural to experiment with different poetry forms. By doing so, it gives you the freedom to discover what words can really reveal about your feelings and what you are trying to convey. The last poetry forms that I had a chance to work with were the Haiku/Senryu. I used these forms for my last poetry book Spring’s Tepid Breath because it was the simplest way to express myself about my trials and tribulations in the time of my mother’s death. For my upco

Reviving Your Confidence with the Tools of the Trade
I took the Crafting an Effective Writer: Tools of the Trade on Coursera this past Spring. The five-week course covered a basic review of sentence and paragraph structures as well as present and past tense. There were several writing assignment that I had to complete along with peer reviews in order to receive the Certificate of Completion at the end of the course. Below is my last writing assignment based on my feelings about completing the course. Reviving Your Confidence w

How To Be a Better Writer/ Author on Goodreads and Linkedin
Goodreads When I first opened an account on Goodreads back in 2011, I started as a reader. I wanted to catalogue all the books that I had read and plan on reading. I had an account on Shelfari but I wanted more activity and connections with other readers (It seems everyone abandoned Shelfari for Goodreads). When I started importing my books into Goodreads, I liked the format of the library catalogue—it looked more sharper and cleaner compared to the boring bookshelf at Shelfa

Some questions from Ask the Author on Goodreads
Over the weekend, I participated in Ask the Author on Goodreads. Ask the Author is a new tool that helps connect readers with authors and also, authors with authors. The readers or fellow authors can ask an author questions related to their books or any general writing questions they may have. Here are some questions and answers: I am unfamiliar with blogging, how does that work out? Blogging is basically writing about a subject that you are familiar with or an expert on. The

New Haiku Chapbook: Spring's Tepid Breath
Whenever I have a pen between my fingers scribbling my thoughts on a piece of paper or my hands are dancing out a scene on my keyboard--my body feels energized. The empty spaces are filled up. Writing is very therapeutic to me. Some people need a pill, a drink, or some other kind of narcotic to get them through the angst of life. Some people even put themselves in the middle of a sexual encounter to block out the troubles. What I need is some kind of writing mechanism to help

Artist Dates & Creativity
Lately, I 've been a little sluggish in the Artist part of me, even though I just finished editing a new poetry book (I'm solely the editor in this venture). Not to say being an editor is not creative because you are very much the helper in bringing the work alive. But, it is not what I created or thought of in the first place. It is not My Muse that is highlighted but someone else. I don't think this is egotistical of me saying this but merely an Artist who has been stifled

Remembering Louis Reyes Rivera
Wow! I just heard the news about Louis Reyes Rivera. I first discovered him at African Voices Rhythn, Rhyme, and Ritual event in 2004. He was reciting his Spoken Word with a band called the Jazzoets. He so inspired me to do the same. A year later, I was asked to recite my poetry with the band Hudson Hope. Without seeing Mr. Rivera perform, I don't think I could have done it. I wrote this poem after I saw him perform in 2004. My only regret is that I didn't take his poetry cla

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss
When, I was a kid, my eyes were glued to the TV and my ears were perked, listening to Boris Karloff narrate How the Grinch Stole Christmas! I loved the music of this story. And as a mother of a five and four year old, I love hearing the music as I recite The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and of course, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! But one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books is Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? I love it because I can really become animated when I read it out lo
