Coffee, Poetry, Prose, and the RAA Writers Group April 15, 2013

Yep, that sums up what happened on Sunday, April 14 at Sip This in Valley Stream, NY. Sip This is a small neighborhood coffee shop that has embraced the art and family entertainment scene. On any night or day, something is happening: art exhibits, children’s programming, trivia nights, magicians, music of all genres, and poetry. So, it is fitting that the RAA Writers Group would spread their wings and fly to this venue. The RAA Writers Group is known to host readings to community outreach events and earlier this year was invited to perform for former RAA President Geoff Rawling’s Mixed Blend art exhibit at the Kingsborough Brooklyn Library but this performance at Sip This, marks the first performance out of the six boroughs (Rockaway is its own entity)—with great success! The audience was made up of regular patrons working on laptops and meet ups for a ‘good cup of Joe’, as well as Rockawayites who came to support, and local poets looking for some fresh poetry to hear. The writers: George C. Pizzo, Maureen McNelis, Mary Najeddine, Carolyn Rushefsky, and Jerry Gillia showcased their tremendous talent for the written word. They read sentimental poetry and essays paying homage to Rockaway and their undying muses. They even performed a staged reading of a play about a poem –now how’s that for honoring National Poetry Month! A good time was had by all.
